Most kids have a natural affinity for animals. Unfortunately, keeping pets is not always allowed in homes. Sometimes, keeping pets can also be hazardous for a child’s health. However, this should not keep your young ones from being able to appreciate animals. There are a myriad other ways to express appreciation for our furry friends. In this edition of Project Paper Cup, we are going to explore one of those ways. Ladies, gentlemen, and especially kids, Project Paper Cup presents Animal Cups!
For this project, we shall be using yogurt paper cups. Yogurt paper cups have a wider rim and a wider base than your regular paper cup, so this should give us more creative opportunities. Aside from used yogurt paper cups (make sure you’ve cleaned them off!), you will also need your art supplies, scissors, some yarn, and glue. As always, adult supervision is strongly advised.
We will be working on two animals, a mouse and a jellyfish. For the mouse cup, first decorate the outside of your yogurt paper cup. Use paint or colored pens to make a colorful mouse body. Next, bring out some crumpled paper and glue it onto the inside lip. Using some art paper, add eyes, a nose, and whiskers to your mouse. If you have some felt paper, cut out some mouse ears and attach them onto the sides of the cup. Finally, use a pipe cleaner to create the mouse’s tail.
Now, if your kids are fond of sea creatures, you can use your recycled yogurt paper cup to create a paper cup jellyfish. With some adult assistance, poke two holes on the bottom of the paper cup. This is where you will run some yarn or a piece of string so you hang your yogurt paper cup jellyfish. Make paper streamers about six inches long and glue them to the inside of the rim of the paper cup. Continue to do this until the entire mouth of the cup is lined with paper streamers. Now hang the paper cup upside down and watch the paper streamers fall down from the cup, just like jellyfish tentacles. You can also color the cup to make the jellyfish body whatever colors you like. This is a great and eco-friendly decor idea for under-the-sea-themed parties or just simply as a room decor.
